Frank Weisman’s education in fine cabinet making began from the ground up. Thirty years ago, in the northern California woods, Frank began a love affair with wood. The great variety of native Northern California hardwoods, from tanbark oak to black oak; the pink-brown of madrone, the deep richness of black walnut, the spalted alder, even burls of manzanita root; each of these called out to be fashioned according to its own unique tone and texture. In Mendocino County, Frank and his partners constructed a classic old-world workshop with hand-built benches and a dazzling array of hand planes and chisels. After the fashion of those who inspired him, world- renowned furniture makers Sam Maloof and James Krenov, Frank learned to cut and fit dovetail joints and shape curvaceous cabriole legs by hand. Power tools soon followed. In 1986 Frank relocated his custom furniture business to Sacramento, and was joined by two expert craftsmen. The fierce dedication of Frank and his fellow artisans to a beauty and quality of furniture-making rarely seen today culminated in his winning a national “Contractor of the Year” award in 2000. |
The “tour-de-force” was a double-sided curved 18-foot tall wall of chequered Swiss pear wood panels. A curved door opened into a niche for a TV on one side of the wall, and a fireplace on the other. This level of customized project, however, proved affordable for only a few.
Seeking to provide a wider range of clients with a superior product
at a more affordable price, Frank decided to take on a line of cabinets.
